Dear all,

As per all previous announcements providing early visibility of the Concrete Domains proposal, SNOMED International are proceeding as planned with the introduction of the new Concrete Domains content in the July 2021 International Edition release package.

Following on from the September 2020 and February 2021 technical previews of the impending Concrete Domains changes (for which no adverse feedback was received), SNOMED International are now implementing the changes in the July 2021 International Edition Production release.  This contains drug concept strengths and counts expressed as concrete values in a new Relationships file.  The RF2 Release package for July 2021 is therefore planned to incorporate the following changes:

  • Inferred Relationship file changes:
    • All relationships for values of strength and count for medical products inactivated
    • All relationships for attributes of strength and count for medicinal products inactivated

    • New relationships for new concept model data attributes of strength, count, product name, and supplier for medicinal products will be added

  • Stated OWL Axiom file changes:

    • Existing drug concept axioms updated to use concrete values
    • Existing strength and count attribute types will be inactivated, replaced with new ones using the same FSNs.
  • New Inferred "Relationship Concrete Values" files:
    • New concrete values relationship files added to the RF2 package structure, containing all new relationships for values of strength and count for medical products:
      • sct2_RelationshipConcreteValues_Delta_INT_20210731.txt
      • sct2_RelationshipConcreteValues_Full_INT_20210731.txt
      • sct2_RelationshipConcreteValues_Snapshot_INT_20210731.txt
  • MRCM file changes:
    • MRCM includes new rows to indicate that the new attribute types are expected to take a concrete domain - specifically numbers - as target values.

Please refer to the final July 2021 International Edition Release Notes (which will be released on 31st July 2021) for full details of the confirmed changes.

If you can foresee any critical issues with the transition plans, or have any questions regarding any of these upcoming changes, please contact SNOMED International immediately at support@snomed.org with “Concrete Domains transition question” in the subject line.

Kind regards,
Andrew Atkinson  |  Release Manager

Dear Members,

The Beta release of the July 2021 SNOMED CT® International Edition is now available to SNOMED International Members only, from the MLDS distribution site.

This Beta release provides Member organizations an opportunity to perform a technical evaluation of the core SNOMED CT® files, and to provide feedback to SNOMED International, before the International Edition is distributed to Members by 30th June 2021.  The public release of the International Edition to Affiliate licensees will take place on 31st July 2021.  Please note that this Beta Release should not be distributed to Affiliate Licensees or any third parties before this date.

The BETA release package is distributed for evaluation purposes only. It must not be used in production clinical systems or in clinical settings.

When providing feedback, please include as much detail as possible, incorporating references to, or samples of, specific instances of the issue being reported.  The absence of sufficient information to allow SNOMED International to confirm the reported issue may result in no action being taken prior to the Member release.  Feedback on content related issues will be assessed and prioritized by SNOMED International, and a decision will be made as to whether to address any reported content issues for the Member release or as part of a future International Edition release.  Although all feedback will be carefully reviewed, there should be no expectation that any non-technical issues will be addressed prior to the distribution of the Member release.

Feedback on the Beta release files will be accepted until 23:59 UTC on 16th June 2021 – although SNOMED International Members are urged to submit their findings as early as possible.

All files distributed to SNOMED International Members for the July 2021 International Edition are available from the  “July 2021 v0.1 BETA” version in the “Offline & Alpha/Beta versions” section of the “SNOMED CT International Edition” project, which can be found on the “SNOMED Releases” page in MLDS, accessed here:

https://mlds.ihtsdotools.org/#/ihtsdoReleases

The SNOMED CT International Edition contains SNOMED CT files in Release Format 2 (RF2) only, distributed in a zipped file archive (the Release Notes are located separately in the same repository as normal):

  • xSnomedCT_InternationalRF2_BETA_20210731T120000Z.zip

The SNOMED CT International Edition Release Notes can also be accessed online:

Please see the Technical Updates section (3) of the Release Notes, plus the following Early Visibility confluence page, to remind yourselves of all of the important upcoming changes in this release, both technical and content:

In particular, please review the following sections of the Release Notes, which contain important changes included in this release:

  • 2.21.3. Concrete Domains and Numeric Representation

  • 3.2.1.3. Concrete Domains launch

Work is continuing in the community to refine the new COVID-19 Vaccines content in time for the July 2021 Release.  Due to the rapidly evolving situation, however, this content is still not finalised and will therefore not all be available for review in the Beta release package.  Additional COVID-19 Vaccines content will follow in the Member Release + the final Production release on 31st July 2021.  If you would like to be involved in the review process for this content in July, please contact SNOMED International at support@snomed.org.

If you have any questions about the July 2021 International Edition, or have difficulties downloading this file, please contact SNOMED International at support@snomed.org with “July 2021 International Edition Beta release question” in the subject line.
