Dear all,
SNOMED International would like to provide you with advance notice of a proposal to improve the International Edition Release schedule, as part of our ongoing commitment to innovation and process improvement.
Currently, the monthly Release is published on the final day of the month, which causes issues for some of our community. After significant consultation, it was agreed that these issues can be mitigated by moving the release date of each monthly International Edition package to the first of each month.
The proposed plan is to transition to this new process in September 2023, as per the following schedule:
30 June 2023
31 July 2023
1 September 2023
1 October 2023
…
As can be seen, during the transition we will publish the final end-of-the-month release on 31 July and then the first release in the new schedule on 1 September (one month and one day later). Subsequently, there will be a release on the first of each month.
For full details please see the Q&A blog post on this proposal.
Further confirmation will follow in Q3, however in the meantime if you have any concerns or questions on these proposed changes, please let us know by 12 June 2023, at release@snomed.org.
Kind regards,
Andrew Atkinson | Release Manager

Dear all,
The first Production release of the SNOMED CT MedDRA Simple Map package is now available from the MLDS distribution site. This release is dependent upon, and should therefore be consumed in conjunction with the January 2023 SNOMED CT International Edition.
SNOMED International and ICH/MedDRA MSSO, together with regulatory and industry partners, developed the SNOMED CT to MedDRA and MedDRA to SNOMED CT maps as part of the WEB-RADR 2 project, funded by the EU’s Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI). For full details, please see the Release Notes linked below.
All files distributed for this release are available from the “January 2023 PRODUCTION Release v1.0” version in the “SNOMED CT MedDRA Simple Map package” project, which can be found on the “SNOMED Releases” page in MLDS, accessed here (please ensure that you login to MLDS first):
The SNOMED CT MedDRA Simple Map release is distributed in a zipped archive file in the official RF2 format as follows:
- SnomedCT_SNOMEDMedDRAMapPackage_PRODUCTION_20230430T120000Z.zip
In line with the SNOMED International packaging guidelines, the Release Notes have been separated from the release package, and so can be downloaded as distinct files from the same MLDS release version. The Release Notes can also be accessed online:
Those Members using MLDS as their distribution site will find that their affiliates have access to the new release automatically.
If you have any questions about the SNOMED CT MedDRA Simple Map package Production release, or have difficulties downloading the files, please contact SNOMED International at support@snomed.org with “2023 SNOMED CT MedDRA Simple Map package Production release question” in the subject line.

Dear all,
The Production release of the April 2023 SNOMED CT® Spanish Edition is now available to everyone from the MLDS distribution site. This release contains the Spanish language version of the January 2023 SNOMED CT® International Edition.
All files distributed for the April 2023 SNOMED CT® Spanish Edition are available from the “April 2023 v1.0” version in the “SNOMED CT Spanish package - Edición en Español” project, which can be found on the “SNOMED Releases” page in MLDS, accessed here:
https://mlds.ihtsdotools.org/#/ihtsdoReleases
The SNOMED CT® Spanish Edition Production release is distributed as a single zipped file archive:
SnomedCT_SpanishRelease-es_PRODUCTION_20230430T120000Z.zip
The Release Notes and Starter Guide have been separated from the Spanish Edition package, and can be viewed online on SNOMED International’s Release Management Confluence website:
- Release Notes:
- Starter Guide:
The Release Notes have also been published as a .pdf file alongside the release package, in the same MLDS repository.
Note: A proposal is being reviewed to improve the delivery schedule of the Spanish Edition, by bringing the Spanish Releases closer into alignment with each of the relevant International Edition releases. This would involve the removal of the BETA feedback period from the Spanish Release schedule from the October 2023 cycle onwards, allowing us to publish the Spanish Edition a month earlier, on 31st March and 30th September each year. This should have no impact on the quality of the final content, as we have not received any feedback on the Spanish BETA releases for several cycles. If you have any strong objections to this proposal, however, please email us at release@snomed.org.
If you have any questions about the April 2023 SNOMED CT® Spanish Edition Production release, or have difficulties downloading the files, please contact SNOMED International at support@snomed.org with “April 2023 Spanish Edition Production release” in the subject line.
Kind regards,
Andrew Atkinson | Release Manager
Dear all
An opportunity has been identified to improve the Release schedule for the SNOMED CT Spanish Edition package. Currently the Spanish Edition Release is published on 30th April + 31st October each year, which is several months after the relevant dependent International Edition is published (in January/July respectively). This was necessary in order to allow sufficient time for both the full translation of the new/updated International concepts, and rigorous validation to ensure high quality deliverables.
However, we have now streamlined these processes, and are looking to start bringing the Spanish Edition closer into alignment with each of the relevant International Edition releases. The first step, therefore, will be the removal of the now obsolete BETA feedback period from the Spanish Release schedule from the Q3 2023 cycle onwards. This will enable us to bring the Spanish Edition Release forward by one month, publishing it on 30th September and 31st March from 30th September 2023 onwards.
After this, we will continue to review and improve the processes and bring the Spanish release dates forward again when it is safe to do so without compromising the quality of the content.
If you have any concerns or questions on these proposed changes, please let us know on release@snomed.org, or by responding to this message directly.
Kind regards,
Andrew Atkinson | Release Manager

Dear all
An opportunity has been identified to modify the Release schedule for the SNOMED CT International Edition package. Currently the monthly Release is published on the final day of the month, which is not ideal as this date changes every month. The current process has also caused some issues with certain extension releases when concepts are promoted to the International Edition before they are officially published. This introduced duplicates into Extensions as the concepts were published on the same date. There is no way to extend the automated validation to cover this scenario, as the two packages are completely distinct, due to the relevant Extension releases being dependent on International Edition packages from before the invalid promotion occurred.
This can be mitigated to a large extent by moving the release date to the 1st of each month, as there are far fewer Extension releases that are published on the 1st than on the last day of the month. In addition, this new approach standardises the effectiveTimes and package naming conventions to be the 1st of each month instead of 28th/30th/31st.
The proposed plan is to transition to this new process in Q3 of 2023, however we will keep you informed of any changes to this schedule as the year progresses.
When the transition occurs, we will not publish two monthly releases on subsequent days - so for example we would not publish the July 2023 release on 31st July and then move to the first of the month schedule on the 1st August, as there would be no useful changes to publish. Instead, we would publish the July 2023 release on 31st July and then move the August 2023 release to the 1st September.
If you have any concerns or questions on these proposed changes, please let us know on release@snomed.org, or by responding to this message directly.

Andrew Atkinson | Release Manager

Feedback should be sent as soon as possible, but no later than the 17th February 2023.
When providing feedback, please include as much detail as possible, incorporating references to, or samples of, specific instances of the issue being reported. The absence of sufficient information to allow SNOMED International to confirm the reported issue may result in no action being taken prior to the Production release. Feedback on content related issues will be assessed and prioritized by SNOMED International, and a decision will be made as to whether to address any reported content issues for the Production release or as part of a future release.
