Dear Members,

The Beta release of the January 2020 SNOMED CT® International Edition is now available to SNOMED International Members only, from the MLDS distribution site.

This Beta release provides Member organizations an opportunity to perform a technical evaluation of the core SNOMED CT® files, and to provide feedback to SNOMED International, before the International Edition is distributed to Members by 31st December 2019.  The public release of the International Edition to Affiliate licensees will take place on 31st January 2020.  Please note that this Beta Release should not be distributed to Affiliate Licensees or any third parties before this date.  The BETA release package is distributed for evaluation purposes only. It must not be used in production clinical systems or in clinical settings.

When providing feedback, please include as much detail as possible, incorporating references to, or samples of, specific instances of the issue being reported.  The absence of sufficient information to allow SNOMED International to confirm the reported issue may result in no action being taken prior to the Member release.  Feedback on content related issues will be assessed and prioritized by SNOMED International, and a decision will be made as to whether to address any reported content issues for the Member release or as part of a future International Edition release.  Although all feedback will be carefully reviewed, there should be no expectation that any non-technical issues will be addressed prior to the distribution of the Member release.

Dear all,

The Production release of the July 2019 SNOMED CT® General Practitioner/Family Practitioner (GP/FP) Reference Sets package is now available, from the MLDS distribution site.

This package may be distributed to Affiliate Licensees and third parties at any time, within the relevant licensing restrictions.  The Production release of the SNOMED CT® General Practitioner/Family Practitioner (GP/FP) Reference Sets package is dependent upon, and should therefore be consumed in conjunction with the July 2019 SNOMED CT® International Edition.

All files distributed are available from the  “July 2019 v1.0” version in the “SNOMED CT GP/FP Refset package - SNOMED International” project, which can be found on the “SNOMED Releases” page in MLDS, accessed here:

https://mlds.ihtsdotools.org/#/ihtsdoReleases

The SNOMED CT® GP/FP Reference Sets package contains SNOMED CT files in Release Format 2 (RF2) only, distributed in a zipped file archive:

  • doc_SnomedCT-GPFP-Production-ReleaseNotes_Current-en-US_INT_20190731.pdf

The Release Notes can also be accessed online from the following page:

Those Members using MLDS as their distribution site will find that their affiliates have access to the new release automatically.

Please note:  SNOMED International have undertaken a review of a number of the derivative products over the past two years (including the GP/FP refset and the map to ICPC-2), in order to gather updated requirements and evidence of usage. This has included reaching out to Members, clinical groups, other stakeholders as well as those who have downloaded either the GP/FP refset or the map to ICPC-2, and we were unable to find anyone who is using the SNOMED CT to ICPC-2 map.  In addition, in discussions with WONCA, they have confirmed that ICPC-2 is no longer being maintained by them as they are now focusing on producing and releasing ICPC-3.  They see no use case for maintaining the current mapping and recommended that the January 2019 release should be the last one containing ICPC-2 updates.

On the basis of these discussions and investigations, a decision was taken jointly with Wonca to deprecate the map.  SNOMED International have therefore inactivated all ICPC-2 map records in the current release package, ceased publishing the ICPC-2 release notes, and removed references to ICPC-2 in package naming conventions.

If you have any questions about the July 2019 SNOMED CT® GP/FP Reference Sets package, or have difficulties downloading the files from the distribution site, please contact SNOMED International at support@snomed.org with “July 2019 SNOMED CT® GP/FP Reference Sets package release question” in the subject line.

Dear Members,

The October 2019 SNOMED CT® Alternative Stated Relationship file DEMONSTRATION release is now available to SNOMED International Members, from the MLDS distribution site.

This DEMONSTRATION release provides Members with the opportunity to see the Stated Relationship records as calculated in relation to the January 2019 International Edition, as if the OWL Axiom migration had never happened.  It therefore offers up an alternative view to either that of the July 2019 International Edition release, or from that of the February 2019 Complete OWL file Demonstration release package.  It is NOT a continuation of either the Production International release, or the previous Complete OWL file demonstration releases.  The purpose is solely to provide a view to the community which isolates modelling changes that could impact their products and systems.  For example, assisting in the identification of extension content that was modelled in alignment with now improved/deprecated modelling patterns and editorial policies.

The DEMONSTRATION release package is distributed for evaluation purposes only. It must not be used in production clinical systems or in clinical settings, or distributed to Affiliate Licensees or any third parties at this time.

All files distributed to SNOMED International Members for the October 2019 DEMONSTRATION Release are available from the “October 2019 v0.1 *DEMONSTRATION ONLY*” version in the “Offline & Alpha/Beta versions” section of the “SNOMED CT International Edition” project, which can be found on the “SNOMED Releases” page in MLDS, accessed here (please ensure that you login to MLDS first):

          https://mlds.ihtsdotools.org/#/ihtsdoReleases

The SNOMED CT DEMONSTRATION release contains SNOMED CT Stated Relationship files in Release Format 2 (RF2) only, distributed in a zipped file archive (the Release Notes are located separately in the same repository as normal):

Dear all,

The Production release of the January 2019 General Practitioner/Family Practitioner (GP/FP) SNOMED CT® Reference Sets and SNOMED CT® to ICPC-2 Map package is now available, from the MLDS distribution site.

This package may be distributed to Affiliate Licensees and third parties at any time, within the relevant licensing restrictions.  The Production release of the GP/FP SNOMED CT® Reference Sets and SNOMED CT® to ICPC-2 Map package is dependent upon, and should therefore be consumed in conjunction with the January 2019 SNOMED CT® International Edition.

All files distributed are available from the  “January 2019 v1.0” version in the “GP/FP SNOMED CT Refset and SNOMED CT to ICPC2 Map package - SNOMED International” project, which can be found on the “SNOMED Releases” page in MLDS, accessed here:

https://mlds.ihtsdotools.org/#/ihtsdoReleases

The GP/FP SNOMED CT® Reference Sets and SNOMED CT® to ICPC-2 Map package contains SNOMED CT files in Release Format 2 (RF2) only, distributed in a zipped file archive:

  • SnomedCT_GPFPICPC2_PRODUCTION_20190412T120000Z.zip

The Release Notes have been separated from the release package, and so can be downloaded as distinct pdf files from the same MLDS release version:

  • doc_SnomedCT-ICPC2-Production-ReleaseNotes_Current-en-US_INT_20190131.pdf

The Release Notes can also be accessed online from the following pages:

Those Members using MLDS as their distribution site will find that their affiliates have access to the new release automatically.

Please note:  SNOMED International have undertaken a review of a number of the derivative products over the past 18 months (including the GP/FP refset and the map to ICPC-2), in order to gather updated requirements and evidence of usage. They see no use case for maintaining the current mapping and have recommended that this January 2019 release should be the last one.

On the basis of these discussions and investigations, a proposal has been put forward to deprecate the SNOMED CT to ICPC-2 map after this January 2019 release, and SNOMED International will shortly be pushing this through the formal deprecation process.

If you have any concerns about this because you have a use case that needs to be met, we would like to hear from you urgently at support@snomed.org with “Deprecation proposal for the SNOMED CT® to ICPC-2 Map package” in the subject line.

If you have any other questions about the January 2019 GP/FP SNOMED CT® Reference Sets and SNOMED CT® to ICPC-2 Map package, or have difficulties downloading the files from the distribution site, please contact SNOMED International at support@snomed.org with “January 2019 GP/FP SNOMED CT® Reference Sets and SNOMED CT® to ICPC-2 Map package release question” in the subject line.

Dear all

SNOMED International are currently considering moving towards more frequent delivery of the SNOMED CT International Release package.

The move towards more frequent releases of SNOMED CT would realise several benefits, including:

  • The potential to be able to get content changes into the terminology in a shorter time frame.
  • The fostering of better interoperability, as a result of entities being able to consume release content that is more aligned with other organisations.
  • The prevention of circular dependencies that occur in longer projects, due to the move towards smaller, more manageable authoring projects.
  • More automated validation services, as a result of the inherent removal of the Alpha and Beta stages in the Release cycle.

The only significant change for most users will be the removal of Delta files from SNOMED CT release packages. They will instead be available via an on-demand service, which will allow the creation of bespoke Delta files, relative to a given previously published release. This will inherently mean that some Delta files may start to contain multiple effectiveTimes.

We would therefore encourage any users who feel like they might have feedback on this proposal to complete the following survey:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdHZDo5kk2-Tx6SqA3yez1Rw8L8KPbPW8bzuiduxKyAtHJOJw/viewform?usp=sf_link

In addition to the twice annual release of the SNOMED CT International edition, SNOMED International produces and releases a number of SNOMED CT derivative products which are released on a 6 monthly cycle, and in line with the SNOMED CT International Edition release.

Recent work to evaluate the use of these products among our different stakeholder groups has indicated that current usage of the range of derivative products is comparatively low due to stakeholder challenges with consuming a twice annual release.  This, coupled with our efforts to better utilize the organization’s content and release resources, has led SNOMED International to the decision to move to an annual release cycle for these products, following an established schedule in line with the January or July International Edition release.
