Dear all,

Following on from previous announcements providing early visibility of the Concrete Domains proposal, SNOMED International would now like to provide more technical details of the planned transition.  Please see here (and the various sub-pages) for details of the current proposed technical changes:  https://confluence.ihtsdotools.org/mag/concrete-domains-community-of-practice-consultation.

In this child page in particular there is guidance on the impact for both maintainers of SNOMED CT plus for implementers and vendors of software that utilises the terminology:  https://confluence.ihtsdotools.org/mag/concrete-domains-community-of-practice-consultation/snomed-international-proposal-for-representing-concrete-domains-in-rf2

Please, however, be aware that the technical proposal is still in the consultation stage, and therefore changes to the proposal may still be made before the final solution is implemented.

The transition has been discussed and agreed with numerous stakeholders from the community, and as such is targeted to be implemented over the course of the next two International Release cycles, as follows:

Q1 2021:

  • A technical preview will be published in line with the January 2021 International Edition, with drug concept strengths and counts expressed as concrete values in the new Relationships file.
  • This is currently planned to be a full RF2 International Edition package (as opposed to a standalone Delta file containing Concrete Domains), containing all International content in addition to the new Concrete Domains Relationship file
    • (ie) it will comprise the January 2021 International Edition release as if we had already transitioned to Concrete Domains, as a preview of what the final Release package will look like when the transition is complete.

Q3 2021:

  • The current target is for the July 2021 International Edition to be the first release after the transition to Concrete Domains.  This means that the RF2 package would be impacted as follows:
    • existing drug concept strength and count relationships inactivated +
    • existing strength and count attribute types will be inactivated, replaced with new ones using the same FSNs.
    • Inferred Relationship file changes:
  • Stated OWL Axiom file changes:
    • existing drug concept axioms will be updated to use concrete values +
    • existing strength and count attribute types will be inactivated, replaced with new ones using the same FSNs.
  • Additional Features in International Release
    • new separate concrete value relationship file will express these same attributes using numeric values
    • new attributes will be used, although they will have the same FSNs as the current attributes
    • MRCM will include new rows to indicate that the new attribute types are expected to take a concrete domain - specifically numbers - as target values.

If you can foresee any critical issues with the transition plans, or have any questions regarding any of these upcoming changes, please contact SNOMED International immediately at support@snomed.org with “Concrete Domains transition question” in the subject line.

Dear all

In the past few years we have introduced additional review periods as part of the release cycle of the SNOMED CT International edition - we now currently produce Alpha, Beta and Member releases for review during each International Edition cycle.

Given the relative stability of the recent releases, we are now considering replacing the Alpha release period with content authoring, which would result in SNOMED International being able to include an extra 2 weeks worth of editing improvements in each International Edition release.  We would, of course, continue to produce the Beta and Member releases for everyone to review and provide feedback before the final Production release is published.   This change would be implemented from the January 2021 International Edition release cycle onwards.

If you can foresee any issues with this please contact SNOMED International by 31st July 2020 at support@snomed.org with "International Edition Alpha release schedule question" in the subject line.

Kind regards

Andrew Atkinson  |  Release Manager

Dear Members,

The Beta release of the July 2020 SNOMED CT® International Edition is now available to SNOMED International Members only, from the MLDS distribution site.

This Beta release provides Member organizations an opportunity to perform a technical evaluation of the core SNOMED CT® files, and to provide feedback to SNOMED International, before the International Edition is distributed to Members by 30th June 2020.  The public release of the International Edition to Affiliate licensees will take place on 31st July 2020.  Please note that this Beta Release should not be distributed to Affiliate Licensees or any third parties before this date.

The BETA release package is distributed for evaluation purposes only. It must not be used in production clinical systems or in clinical settings.

When providing feedback, please include as much detail as possible, incorporating references to, or samples of, specific instances of the issue being reported.  The absence of sufficient information to allow SNOMED International to confirm the reported issue may result in no action being taken prior to the Member release.  Feedback on content related issues will be assessed and prioritized by SNOMED International, and a decision will be made as to whether to address any reported content issues for the Member release or as part of a future International Edition release.  Although all feedback will be carefully reviewed, there should be no expectation that any non-technical issues will be addressed prior to the distribution of the Member release.

Feedback on the Beta release files will be accepted until 23:59 UTC on 17th June 2020 – although SNOMED International Members are urged to submit their findings as early as possible.

All files distributed to SNOMED International Members for the July 2020 International Edition are available from the  “July 2020 v0.1 BETA” version in the “Offline & Alpha/Beta versions” section of the “SNOMED CT International Edition” project, which can be found on the “SNOMED Releases” page in MLDS, accessed here:

          https://mlds.ihtsdotools.org/#/ihtsdoReleases

Feedback should be sent to info@snomed.org as soon as possible, but no later than 30th November 2020.

When providing feedback, please include as much detail as possible, incorporating references to, or samples of, specific instances of the issue being reported.  The absence of sufficient information to allow SNOMED International to confirm the reported issue may result in no action being taken prior to the Production release.  Feedback on content related issues will be assessed and prioritized by SNOMED International, and a decision will be made as to whether to address any reported content issues for the Production release or as part of a future release.

The SNOMED CT® Spanish Edition Production release is distributed as a single zipped file archive:

  • SnomedCT_SpanishRelease-es_PRODUCTION_20200430T120000Z.zip

The Release Notes and Starter Guide have been separated from the Spanish Edition package, and can be viewed online on SNOMED International’s Release Management Confluence website:

The Release Notes have also been published as a .pdf file alongside the release package, in the same MLDS repository.

The Release Packaging format has been updated to bring it in line with the SNOMED CT International Edition standards, so there may be changes to both file naming conventions and the package contents themselves.  Please see the Readme file for details of any new naming conventions and file structures, and the Release Notes for further details.
