I believe “surgical” was historically added to distinguish these procedures from laser-based interventions, which achieve a similar anatomical outcome without tissue excision. Given that laser iridectomy was inactivated and replaced by laser iridotomy in SNOMED CT (from your advice on laser procedures), the continued coexistence of both iridectomy and surgical iridectomy appears duplicative. Your advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
Hi all, We’re currently looking into the finding site for a new concept request: Chemical burn of periocular tissue (disorder). In doing so, it’s become clear that the terminology for the regions around the eye could use some clarification. Could we get your thoughts on the differences between the following terms? • Periorbital region • Ocular adnexa • Periocular region Are there key distinctions in how these are used clinically or anatomically? Any overlap or nuances we sho
We have received the following query regarding the concept 413921009 |Corneal subepithelial haze (disorder)|: “The FSN 413921009 |Corneal subepithelial haze (disorder)| is represented by a synonym “Corneal haze”. There are two concepts, 424353002 |Corneal haze caused by herpes zoster (disorder)| and 425961009 |Corneal haze caused by herpes simplex (disorder)|, which we would expect to be children of 413921009 |Corneal subepithelial haze (disorder)|. However, they are siblings. Also, the word
In 2021, a request was received to inactivate this concept, citing the inaccuracy of including “glaucoma” in the term. The term “acute” should refer specifically to the acute closure of the angle. While this condition can lead to increased intraocular pressure, it is not appropriate to imply that glaucoma is present. This change has been pending due to the expectation that approval from international glaucoma societies might be required. However, after further discussion with Ian and Anthony,
We have received a query regarding potential duplication of these concepts. While atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis are distinct morphologies in SNOMED, it’s unclear whether this distinction translates effectively to the two disorder concepts. Could these be duplicates?
We have had a request to inactivate this concept as outdated with the rationale that on searching Pubmed only one result is found which dates back to 1962. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4619855/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4619855/ Only one other paper was found by the requester to describe this entity with an excerpt below https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1310198/pdf/taos00036-0309.pdf https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1310198/pdf/taos00036-0309.pdf McLaren,
A colleague has a question about the meaning and use case for the above concept which has no subtypes. We already have 172508004 |Destruction of ciliary body (procedure)| and 231738000 |Partial excision of ciliary body (procedure)| which do have subtypes. These procedures can be performed either for size reduction of the ciliary body to reduce its functionality in glaucoma, or to destroy or remove lesions of the ciliary body. Given this, these procedures cannot be categorised as subtype
On translating these two concepts in the Netherlands they have the following question: Is there a difference in meaning between 'peripapillary choroidal dystrophy' and 'circumpapillary dystrophy of choroid'? 'circum-' and 'peri-' translate as the same meaning and therefore we initially got the same translation for both concepts. We have asked an ophthalmologist in the Netherlands. She says it is the same and that they do not use the term 'circumpapillary' I would be grateful of any input o
Discussion regarding new terms / updates for existing terms for diabetic retinopathy
Hi All My colleague is currently working in the area of laser procedures and would appreciate your help with a list of laser procedures on the eye. He would specifically like you to review terming accuracy, duplication and if you also could share any resources that would have accurate definitions of these procedures. The list is available in a spreadsheet which you can edit. Please use a column headed with your name for comment. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FW6ZjrfiM_L-cCBUOl1gjC
