The SNOMED CT Browsers allows the user to navigate the terminology, see the different components and the relationships between them.

SNOMED CT is distributed to its users as a release package that contains a collection of plain text files that follows the RF2 specification. A Browser offers a view of the content of SNOMED CT that results from the processing of the release packages content and the creation of a friendly User Interface in order to support basic functions like:

  • Search: the ability to search SNOMED CT content using terms, even partial terms, or component IDs. The browser can provide different ways to filter results, constraining to states, languages, modules, etc.
  • Hierarchy navigation: most browser provide a way for the user to navigate the SNOMED CT hierarchies, visualizing the parents, children, ancestors and descendants for any concept.
  • Concept details: Concepts are identified by ConceptIds, browsers include features to present to the user all information linked to a concept, including the descriptions, some times filtered by language, the concept definitions, inferred relationships and reference set memberships, which includes mappings.
  • Refset browsing: some browsers present a list of available refsets, and list their member components and attributes.
  • ECL queries: many browsers allow for the entry and execution of Expression Constraint Language queries. ECL provides an advanced mechanism to filter SNOMED CT content and its used to support constrained data entry in clinical applications, to support meaning based analytics, for quality assurance purposes, etc.
  • Graphical representations: browsers can render the concept definitions as diagrams following the standard diagramming guidelines, or can produce hierarchy graphs that show the relationships of a concept with others.
