The purpose of this association type is to indicate that the suggested target replacement concept for the inactivated concept is NOT semantically equivalent and represents an alternative which is considered to be clinically useful and in the judgement of the author/editor most accurately represents the intended meaning of the inactivated concept. This association type may be used in the following circumstances:
- Where the concept to be inactivated is deemed to be "Outdated"
- As our understanding of medicine evolves the disorder name often changes to reflect our greater understanding of the disease process. As an example, we used to refer to the 2 main types of diabetes as "Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus" and "Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus" reflecting our belief that these were separate disorders, one which could only be treated with insulin and the other which did not require insulin. As our understanding evolved it became apparent that the use of insulin was not a necessary determinant of the type of diabetes as some non-insulin dependent diabetics required insulin to obtain the required control. 2 new "types" of diabetes were
