SNOMED CT is a global terminology and it was designed from the ground up to be multi-lingual. The concepts are abstract clinical ideas and are separated from the terms used to describe them. Translation tools support the creation of SNOMED CT descriptions (terms) in different languages while enforcing a quality assurance process that includes reviews and validations against guidelines and specifications.

The International Edition of SNOMED CT is distributed with English descriptions, and implementations that require other languages to go through a translation process, sometimes these are individual efforts and sometimes these are collective efforts between different countries that share the same language.

Translations are usually planned with a limited scope, starting with prioritized subsets directly related to implementation use cases, and then the coverage of the translation grows over time. Translations are ongoing projects, as new content is created on each new SNOMED CT release the translations are updated to match the international edition.
