310243009 Nutritional assessment (procedure) vs. 1759002 Assessment of nutritional status

4.1 Nutritional assessment and Assessment of nutritional status discussion

D. Pertel

Discuss recommendation for SNOMED CT regarding these two concepts.

A poll of the group shows an even split between those who consider the concepts the same and those that believe the concepts are different with Nutritional assessment being a broader concept.

Distinguishing factors raised by some members are that Assessment of nutritional status are a) things that are measured, b) may not include nutrition related behavioral assessment.

The Nutrition Assessment step in the eNCPT includes concepts that are measured and observed (eg, physical assessment) and includes nutrition related behavior assessment, such as, readiness to change stage.

There appears to be agreement that the synonyms for both concepts may not be synonymous with their respective concepts.

C-CDA reflects the concept Nutrition assessment consistent with the eNCPT as the Academy worked extensively with HL7 so there is no further direction based on C-CDA.

Potential defining attributes for the procedure concepts were briefly reviewed. Defining concepts could be further determined once a decision is made.

Literature provided in the document does not distinguish between the two concepts. Additional literature will be needed to clarify the difference between these if it is to be clear for the profession.
