SNOMED CT Translation Tools

...

support the creation of SNOMED CT descriptions in different languages,

...

with the associated quality assurance processes.

SNOMED CT is a global terminology and it that was purposefully designed from the ground up to be multi-lingual. The SNOMED CT concepts are abstract clinical ideas and are separated from the terms used to describe them. , which can be described using many different synonymous terms. Translation tools support the creation and review of SNOMED CT descriptions (terms) in different languages while enforcing a quality assurance process that includes reviews and validations against guidelines and specifications.

The International Edition of SNOMED CT is distributed with English descriptions , and implementations that require other languages to go through a translation process, sometimes these are individual efforts and sometimes these are collective efforts between different countries that share the same (US and GB English dialects). Currently, entire or part translations of SNOMED CT are available in a number of languages dialects, including US English, UK English, AU English, Spanish, Danish, Dutch, Lithuanian, Swedish and French. Translation tooling can be used to support additional translations of SNOMED CT by Member countries/territories or group of Members that share a common language.

Translations are usually planned with a limited scope, starting with prioritized subsets directly related to implementation use cases, and then in stages, by prioritising subsets of SNOMED CT and then growing the coverage of the translation grows over time. Translations are ongoing projects, as new content is created on each new SNOMED CT release the translations are updated to match the international edition.
