Introduction

The SNOMED CT terminology provides a common language that enables a consistent way of indexing, storing, retrieving, and aggregating clinical data across specialties and sites of care. The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO®) maintains the SNOMED CT technical design, the content architecture, the SNOMED CT content (including the concepts table, the descriptions table, the relationships table, a history table and ICD mappings), and related technical documentation.

This DEMONSTRATION release package is distributed for evaluation purposes only.  It must not be used in production clinical systems or in clinical settings, or distributed to Affiliate Licensees or any third parties.

Audience for this document

This document should be read by all those who will be reviewing or submitting questions or comments related to the Demonstration Release, including participation in any follow up meetings.

Scope and Purpose

The OWL Axiom reference set has been developed to replace the stated relationship file following the first release of a partial OWL Axiom reference set in the July 2018 International Edition.  In this demonstration release, the Stated Relationship records have been calculated in relation to the January 2019 International Edition, as if the OWL Axiom migration had never happened.  They therefore represent the actual authoring changes to the Stated Relationships that happened during the July 2019 editing cycle, as these were otherwise opaque (in particular the inactivations due to modelling) due to the mass inactivation of all Stated Relationship records in the July 2019 International Edition, as part of the OWL Axiom migration.

The purpose is to provide a view to the community which isolates modelling changes that could impact their products and systems.  For example, assisting in the identification of extension content that was modelled in alignment with now improved/deprecated modelling patterns and editorial policies.

Release content

Content detail

The only content in this release will be the alternative view of the Stated Relationships.  This is to focus on the useful content for this specific use case, without causing any confusion which might otherwise ensue from including files that are either identical to the Production International Edition files, or which branch off from the Production content.

To be clear, this Release package offers up an alternative view to either that of the July 2019 International Edition release, or from that of the February 2019 Complete OWL file Demonstration release package.  It is NOT a continuation of either the Production International release, or the previous Complete OWL file demonstration releases.

Effective date

The Demonstration release will be made available with an effectiveTime of 20190731.

Technical Notes

RF2 package format

The only content in this release will be the alternative view of the Stated Relationships.  All other RF2 files will be empty, in order to denote that this is a demonstration release only, and should not under any circumstances be used in Production clinical systems.

Release of OWL reference sets

As an essential part of SNOMED CT Logic Profile Enhancements, the OWL refsets have been developed to represent logic definitions following the international standard of OWL 2 Web Ontology Language. In the International Edition releases for July 2018 and January 2019, the scope for the content in the OWL axiom refset is limited to property chains, transitive properties, reflexive properties, the general concept inclusion (GCI) axioms and additional axioms that are implemented to support the Drug/Anatomy content projects.

In this Demonstration release, the complete OWL Expression refset has been left blank.  This is because the purpose of this package is to provide an alternative view to the Production International Edition releases, which have now migrated to OWL.  This package therefore supposes that the OWL migration hadn't been implemented, and provides a view of what the Stated Relationship files would have looked like if this was the case.

A set of documentation has been developed to support the Logic Profile Enhancements. Please see the detail in the following links:
