Domestic abuse

Domestic violence

Recent request to add the UN definition of domestic abuse to SNOMED concept 371772001 |Domestic abuse (event)|.  Need permission from UN to add or amend this so not added yet pending further discussion.

Domestic abuse, also called "domestic violence" or "intimate partner violence", can be defined as a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner. Abuse is physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person.

At present 404189009 |Domestic violence (event)| is a subtype of domestic abuse - are they synonymous?  They often seem to be used interchangeably.

reference: Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against
women and domestic violence (https://rm.coe.int/168008482e)

“domestic violence” shall mean all acts of physical, sexual, psychological or economic violence that occur within the family or domestic unit or between former or current spouses or partners, whether or not the perpetrator shares  or has shared the same residence with the victim"

Sounds a lot like the UN definition of domestic abuse

Query from member regarding Recreational therapy, Creative therapy and Art therapy.  They are unclear about the difference between recreational therapy and creative therapy.   Is this that 42364006 |Recreational therapy (regime/therapy)| involves arts, crafts, sports, games and outings so is wider than but includes 278415002 |Creative therapy (regime/therapy)|?

https://dictionary.apa.org/recreational-therapy

Art therapy is not currently a subtype of Creative therapy but a child of 276239002 |Therapy (regime/therapy)|

Also definitions of Art therapy are usually restricted to the visual arts such as painting, drawing or sculpture but the SNOMED concept has the synonym Arts based therapy which is probably wider.  This concept also has subtypes of Dance therapy and Music therapy which probably should be siblings of Art therapy.

331297008 |Somatoform disorder (disorder)|

Is this still needed as a distinct concept or should it be a synonym on 723916001 |Bodily distress disorder (disorder)| which already has the synonym Somatic symptom disorder.  ICD-11 see these all as synonymous https://icd.who.int/dev11/f/en#/http%3a%2f%2fid.who.int%2ficd%2fentity%2f767044268 and DSM-5 maps somatic symptom disorder to F45.1 Undifferentiated somatoform disorder.

466214007 |Substance abuse (disorder)|

Is it possible to get to a solution on 66214007 |Substance abuse (disorder)|  and replacing this type of concept with - Substance use disorder (disorder) and subtypes that would include, harmful use, dependence, intoxication and withdrawal.  This would seem to be a change consistent with current practice.  Then we could have content of the type:

  • Substance use disorder (disorder)
  • Harmful pattern of use of X (disorder)
  • X dependence (disorder)
  • X withdrawal (disorder)
  • X intoxication (disorder)

We would at least have consistency for our users to aid translations and to inform the SNOMED community of practice.  This is content of high importance to our members.

Minute:

To be carried forward for discussion.  Substance use disorder is generally consistent across countries but other synonyms are rarely consistently used across countries. Carried forward from previous meeting.
