Dear Members,

The Beta release of the July 2017 SNOMED CT® International Edition is now available to SNOMED International Members only, from the MLDS distribution site.

This Beta release provides Member organizations an opportunity to perform a technical evaluation of the core SNOMED CT® files, and to provide feedback to SNOMED International, before the International Edition is distributed to Members on 30th June 2017.  The public release of the International Edition to Affiliate licensees will take place on 31st July 2017.  Please note that this Beta Release should not be distributed to Affiliate Licensees or any third parties before this date.  The BETA release package is distributed for evaluation purposes only. It must not be used in production clinical systems or in clinical settings.

When providing feedback, please include as much detail as possible, incorporating references to, or samples of, specific instances of the issue being reported.  The absence of sufficient information to allow SNOMED International to confirm the reported issue may result in no action being taken prior to the Member release.  Feedback on content related issues will be assessed and prioritized by SNOMED International, and a decision will be made as to whether to address any reported content issues for the Member release or as part of a future International Edition release.  Although all feedback will be carefully reviewed, there should be no expectation that any non-technical issues will be addressed prior to the distribution of the Member release.

Feedback on the Beta release files will be accepted until 23:59 UTC on 19th June 2017 – although SNOMED International Members are urged to submit their findings as early as possible.

All files distributed to SNOMED International Members for the July 2017 International Edition are available from the  “July 2017 v0.1” version in the “Offline & Alpha/Beta versions” section of the “SNOMED CT International Edition” project, which can be found on the “IHTSDO Releases” page in MLDS, accessed here:

          https://mlds.ihtsdotools.org/#/ihtsdoReleases

The SNOMED CT International Edition contains SNOMED CT files in Release Format 2 (RF2) only, distributed in a zipped file archive (the Release Notes and OWL Resource file are located separately in the same repository as normal):

  • xSnomedCT_InternationalRF2_BETA_20170731T120000Z.zip

The SNOMED CT International Edition Release Notes can also be accessed online:

Dear all,

SNOMED International have developed several improvements to both the content, format and structure of the Release packages, and are planning to implement them from the July 2017 International Edition onwards.  We would like to provide the community with early visibility of these improvements, which are as follows:

  1. Update to case significance assignment, in line with the RF2 specification
The incorrect assignment of case significance for descriptions needs to be fixed according to the RF2 specification. The issue is that the value 900000000000448009 |Entire term case insensitive| has not been used due to the data migration from RF1 and limitation of authoring tool. In fact, a majority of SNOMED CT descriptions should be ‘Entire term case insensitive’. These terms can be freely switched to lower or upper case without impact to meaning. The technical batch changes will be made to the case significance value to address the issue. For full details please see the document here: https://confluence.ihtsdotools.org/display/IHTSDO1/IHTSDO-950+Update+of+case+significance+assignment+following+the+RF2+specification

  2. Addition of the MRCM Refsets to the International Edition package
The MRCM Refsets, which were published in February 2017 as a Beta release, will now be included in the International Edition Release package.  The following four new files will be incorporated into the Metadata folder, which is a sub-folder of the Refset folder in the Release package:
      1. der2_sssssssRefset_MRCMDomainDelta_INT_20170731.txt
      2. der2_cissccRefset_MRCMAttributeDomainDelta_INT_20170731.txt
      3. der2_ssccRefset_MRCMAttributeRangeDelta_INT_20170731.txt
      4. der2_cRefset_MRCMModuleScopeDelta_INT_20170731.txt

  3. Improvement to the Release package naming convention
In order to bring the current naming convention into line with the ISO8601 standard, a "Z" suffix will be added to all release package names (but not to internal file names). This will ensure that the time in the release package name is set in the correct context, namely UTC. For example therefore, instead of the July 2017 International Edition release package being called:
    • SnomedCT_InternationalRF2_Production_20170731T120000.zip

    It will instead be called:
    • SnomedCT_InternationalRF2_Production_20170731T120000Z.zip

  4. Addition of a new SEP refset to the International Edition package
This refset is being added in order both to assist with the interim solution for the Additional, non-defining Relationships, and also to enable us to further improve our Quality Assurance processes.  Please see the following page for details of the proposed new Refset:
    SEP maps and reference sets

  5. Improvements to the RefsetDescriptor file
The refsetDescriptor file will be improved in order to include descriptors for the pre-defined reference set types.

  6. Removal of the SNOMED CT RT Identifer refset from the International Edition package
As has been previously communicated, in 2009 SNOMED International's General Assembly decided that effective April 26, 2017 SNOMED International would no longer license the use of SNOMED antecedent (old) works.  This decision received the clinical support of the World Association of Societies of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, as they had identified the same risks.  From April 26, 2017, therefore, SNOMED International is no longer maintaining antecedent versions of SNOMED, including SNOP, SNOMED, SNOMED II, SNOMED International (3.x), and SNOMED RT. Since both clinical science and terminology have evolved considerably since its development, the use of these older versions may involve risk to patients and safety issues.
As part of this process, the antecedent SNOMED Identifier reference set will be withdrawn and no longer be available in the International Edition release.
To provide a shared resource and a single source of truth on these antecedent issues we have assembled a set of FAQs available at our SNOMED International website here: https://ihtsdo.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/folders/4000013539

If you have any questions regarding any of these upcoming changes, please contact SNOMED International immediately at support@snomed.org with “July 2017 International Edition Release improvements question” in the subject line.

Kind regards,

Andrew Atkinson  |  Release Manager

Dear all

The SNOMED International Release Validation Framework (RVF) has transitioned to open-source, meaning that it is now openly available and accessible for use.

The RVF is an extremely useful tool for validating SNOMED CT RF2 packages – SNOMED International is open-sourcing the RVF in order to allow people to extend it as they require for their own purposes.  Non-standard packages (such as translated content), therefore, will need additional assertions adding by the user in order to validate all scenarios.

Please see the following Github repository for the Readme file, which provides details of what prerequisites you will require to have installed, and instructions on how to create and configure a local instance of the RVF:

https://github.com/IHTSDO/release-validation-framework/blob/develop/README.md

Once installed, you can then access full instructions for using the RVF API, which will be available in local Swagger documentation:

http://localhost:8080/api/v1/api-doc.html

If you have any problems installing the RVF using the Readme file, or if you would like to donate any local improvements that you have made, please contact us at info@snomed.org.

Kind regards
