This is a reminder that we are still accepting new applications for the SNOMED CT Implementation Course starting in January 2018. Students who have successfully completed the Foundation Course are now eligible to apply. We will be allocating places for our January 2018 Implementation Course soon. Applications received by the 15th December 2017 will be considered for this course intake. Notification of a place will be sent by the 22nd December 2017.

Thanks very much to everyone who was able to attend the recent meeting in Bratislava (either in person or by phone). It was wonderful to see so many of you there!
A couple of followups from the meeting. Firstly, if you've looked at the SNOMED CT E-Learning Server (http://snomed.org/elearning) since the meeting, you may have noticed that we've added a new menu at the top of the page. Hopefully this will make it easier for people to find available courses. For example, the Starter Presentations, Open Access and SNOMED for Developers can be found in the 'Open Courses' menu, the English and Chinese versions can be found in the 'Foundation Course' menu, and the Implementation and Content Development courses can be found in the 'Advanced Courses' menu. We've also included a way of contacting the E-Learning team with questions.
Secondly, for those of you who would like to encourage software developers in your country to participate in the pilot of the 'SNOMED CT for Developers' pathway, we have added a 'Feedback Form' to the bottom of the pilot course summary. However, it would be a great help to us if Member representatives could consolidate feedback from their region, and send this consolidated feedback to us. Please note that (once logged in) pilot participants can register for the pilot my selecting "SNOMED for Developers" from the "Open Courses" menu at the top of the screen, and then clicking on "Enrol me". This will give then immediate access to all the material in the Developers learning pathway.
Finally, thank you to those Members who have already sent me links to their national SNOMED education resources. If you would be happy to share any national SNOMED education resources with others, please email the relevant URI link to me at email@example.com. We hope to make the 'Member Education Resources' area available shortly via the E-Learning menu.
The E-Learning Advisory Group will be meeting next week in Bratislava on Monday 16th October 2017 from 1:30pm to 5:00pm. The meeting will take place in the room 'London III' at the Crowne Plaza Bratislava. - Country-specific SNOMED CT priorities and requirements.

One of the topics discussed at the teleconference was the next E-Learning Advisory Group meeting to be held during of the SNOMED International business meeting at the Crowne Plaza Bratislava. The ELAG meeting is scheduled for 1:30pm on Monday 16th October 2017. If you plan to attend this meeting, please register at http://www.snomedexpo.org/register-now.
Prior to this meeting, E-Learning Advisory Group representatives are requested to:
- Prepare an update on SNOMED education activities in your country
- Provide advice on the focus of the Content Development Theory Course maintenance efforts

- Open Access SNOMED CT Learning Area
- SNOMED CT for Developers (currently work-in-progress)

- Find information on scalable approaches to CME/CPD accreditation in your region

At this meeting, we will provide an update on SNOMED International's E-Learning activities, and start to prepare for our October meeting in Bratislava.

SNOMED International is still accepting applications for its September courses, including the SNOMED CT Implementation Course and the SNOMED CT Content Development Theory Course. Places for these courses are limited, so if you are interested in participating please apply before the 15th August.
The SNOMED CT Implementation Course is a six month course that explores the various stages of a SNOMED CT implementation – from adoption and planning to specification, design, development, deployment and use. Additional intakes of this course are currently planned for January, May and September 2018.
The SNOMED CT Content Development Theory Course is a three month course that explains the principles of SNOMED CT concept authoring. Additional intakes of the 3 month Content Development Course are currently planned for May and September 2018. Please note that this course will not be offered in January 2018 to enable the Education Team to focus on course maintenance and enhancements to improve the learning opportunities for students.
Both the SNOMED CT Implementation Course and the Content Development Theory Course require the completion of the SNOMED CT Foundation Course. The Foundation Course is a three module course that covers a broad range of topics related to SNOMED CT at a relatively basic level. This course can be started at any time and is self paced.

- Read the ELAG Work Plan 2017.
- Review E-Learning Presentation Metadata and Courses in the E-Learning Presentation Metadata space.
- Review the draft Open Access, Developers, and Data Analyst courses on the E-Learning server
- Currently these draft course are only open to members of ELAG and SNOMED International staff.
- You will find directly links to these in the Open Access, Developers and Data Analysts course plans ... but you will need to login to the E-Learning server.
- All current ELAG members have accounts on the server if you have difficulty locating your login details please use the forgotten password link on the E-Learning server.
- When reviewing these materials please consider:
- The appropriateness of the presentation topics to the audience.
- Gaps in coverage required to meet the need of the audience.
- The overall structure and balance of the learning pathways.

Member representatives on ELAG are encouraged to prepare short updates on SNOMED educational requirements and provisions within their country. If you are unable to attend the meeting (either in person on remotely) please submit these updates in writing. Thanks.

Changes in the Education and Product Support Team

I am pleased to announce that from April 1st, 2017, Linda Bird will take over the leadership of the Education & Product Support Team. It has been a privilege to build and lead this team over the past few years but now is an ideal time for this change to take effect. Linda has been a key player in the successful outcomes achieved by the E-Learning program as well as taking forward many valuable initiatives.
From my perspective, I have great confidence knowing that Linda is willing to take on this role allowing me to step back a little. That being said, stepping back does not mean walking away and for the foreseeable future, I will continue to play a full time role supporting Linda, the team and SNOMED International. My enthusiasm for SNOMED CT is undimmed and I plan to continue contributing to its success.
Following this change, the title of my new is "Senior Product Support Specialist" and Linda's new title is "Head of Product Support". Please join me in congratulating and welcoming Linda to her new role.
This is a short update to keep ELAG members informed about where with are with E-Learning developments at the start of 2017.
No Waiting Self-Enrollment on the Foundation Course
A no waiting approach to starting the SNOMED CT Foundation course was introduced on 1st November 2016. This means that those wanting to take this course can now sign-up for an E-Learning account, self-enroll on the course and get started. In the two months since this was introduced 125 people have self-enrolled on the course.
Application Backlogs Cleared for Implementation and Content Courses
All eligible applicants for the Implementation and Content Development Theory courses whose applications were received before 15th December were offered places on the January 2017 intakes. Applicants who were not eligible (i.e. they had not yet successfully completed the Foundation course or they were already taking an advanced course) will be offered places on the next intake after they complete their current course.
This is the first time we have been able to clear the application backlog for either of these courses and this has only been possible as a result of increases to course capacity. We expect to be able to accommodate all those applying by mid-April 2017 on the May intake unless there is a significant upturn in demand as new Members join SNOMED International. Looking to future, we hope it will be possible to continue offering all eligible applicants a place on the next intake after receipt of their application.
Upgrades to the E-Learning Server
Early in 2017 we need to apply apply a major upgrade the version of the Moodle software used on the E-Learning Server. The end result of this upgrade should be a significant improvement in the E-Learning service. However, we are aware of some potential issues with the upgrade and these may require us to adapt our approach to use of some Moodle components.
Moving to Open Access with Alternative Learning Pathways
As ELAG members are aware we are planning to introduce open-access and alternative learning pathways in the first quarter of 2017. We had hoped to introduce open-access during January but requirements to upgrade to the E-Learning Server (see above) are likely to delay this. Although we have identified a preferred approach to open access we need to confirm that this will work with the upgraded version of the underlying Moodle software.
Please would all E-Learning Advisory Group members check that they have completed and updated the Declaration of Interests. Even if you have no change in your declarable interests please update your row in the table by adding or revising the updated date. If you are a Member representative and have no other interests relevant to SNOMED CT and SNOMED CT Education, then please paste the following text to your entry:
"I am an employee and representative of the NRC in my country and have no other relevant interests in SNOMED CT or SNOMED CT Education"
In all cases, please update the date in your row of the table. Thank you.
We have recently received indirect requests from some Members for E-Learning statistics. These statistics will be provided routinely and efficiently by Louise if you send your request to email@example.com where it can be tracked and processed. Requests for these statistics must be from a National Member ELAG representative or a Member Forum representative. The E-Learning reports we produce for Members are in a standard spreadsheet form covering all three formal courses. Requests sent by less direct routes or asking for specific data are liable to be delayed or misinterpreted. Please help us to help you by using the firstname.lastname@example.org email address and simply requesting the E-Learning Member Statistics for <your country>. Thank you.
