LOINC

The work on LOINC will provide new content to the SNOMED CT International release which provides supporting content for LOINC parts and expressions. As part of the release (s) expression libraries are also completed to provide a link between LOINC expression and SNOMED CT. The scope includes Laboratory LOINC Terms (Top 2000 lab LOINC Terms) and SNOMED CT Observables. For additional information on Observables please click here Observables.

Loinc Content updates

1. Technical Pre-view, release featured flattened rather than nested Expressions which were utilized in previous releases. Also included were some content updates based on feedback from reviewers of the last release, the Observables Group, Regenstrief Institute and the Substance Redesign Team. Over 14000 LOINC Terms linked to equivalent SNOMED CT post-coordinated expressions and over 4200 LOINC Parts mapped to SNOMED CT concepts.
   
   
   
   
2. Create map, expression library, and other needed files for the preview release. This includes all the LOINC Parts (LPs) that are mapped (to existing or new SNOMED CT concepts), but not LPs considered "out of scope", e.g. duplicate or veterinary specific LOINC parts.
   
   
   
3. Review and update files based on feedback received on TP3.
   1. Compare our LP map list with the latest list of LPs received from RII and make any needed updates. Minimal changes are expected to update map. Pending response from RII.
      
      
4. 546 LOINC Parts are ready to be reviewed and potentially mapped to existing SNOMED CT concepts or to newly created ones. The Mapping Team is helping create draft concepts for around 300 of these; Farzaneh and Suzanne will create the remainder.
   
   
5. Publish Candidate Baseline.
   
   
   
6. 1115 LOINC Parts require clarification with RII, Observable redesign project, Substance Team, Editorial Advisory Group, etc. These have been assessed and the number now rests at approx 400-500. The list includes existing issues as well as new ones; therefore, the issues are in different stages of clarification (new, reported to RII, reported to the Observable project, reported to the Substance project, in process, deferred, etc.). About 500 of these concepts are related to a few major issues that are currently being discussed with the Observable project and RII.
   
   
7. RFP -RFP to be awarded in Sept 2016 -5700 only applicable to the top 2000 reported loinc terms - cooperative areas would include other Loinc terms which the IHTSDO does not have the loinc parts for anticipated be tens of thousands.This will continue into 2017. Additional 14k to be completed which is TBD.
   
   
8. Update map and expression library by editing or creating content as needed when LOINC and SNOMED CT changes their content for ongoing maintenance of the terminologies (adds content, retires content, changes content, etc.).
