Apologies

We apologize that the September Nursing CRG meeting has not started.  Erica and I are dependent upon a member of SNOMED International staff to open the Zoom meeting for our monthly CRG call.  Going forward, we will confirm monthly with SNOMED staff that someone will be on the call to open the meeting.  We were excited to discuss this month's terminology topics.  We invite you to post a question or comment on the Nursing CRG discussion page for future discussion.  Christine and Erica

And stay tuned for the October business meeting agenda!

  1. My contribution to agenda item 4:

In nursing, self-care and personal care refer to different levels of assistance and autonomy related to a patient's activities of daily living (ADLs). The distinction between self-care and personal care in nursing is grounded in established nursing theories and practices, often discussed in the context of patient care, independence, and nursing interventions. Here are a few references that support this differentiation:

Dorothea Orem's Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory:
Orem’s theory emphasizes that nursing care becomes necessary when individuals are unable to meet their self-care needs. The theory categorizes care into wholly compensatory, partially compensatory, and supportive-educative systems, where the nurse either fully or partially compensates for a person’s self-care deficits.

    Virginia Henderson’s Need Theory:
Henderson defines nursing as assisting individuals in activities contributing to health or recovery when they lack the strength, knowledge, or will. The theory outlines 14 basic human needs, including self-care activities, and emphasizes that personal care becomes necessary when a patient is unable to meet these needs on their own.

Looking forward to the input of others!
