Whenever a new description is added to SNOMED CTin an extension, the language preferences associated with that description must also be specified. Naturally this applies to extension specific descriptions which have been added to establish a preferred term within a country or region. When used in a national or local edition, this specification can override the language preferences established in the International Edition. The technical specifications are defined by adding the associated This is done by adding rows to a language reference set to indicate a description is acceptable or preferred in a particular whether each description is

Attributes
As previously mentioned, all reference sets use six common attributes. In addition to these, a

The next three attributes have specific implications when used in a language refset. |
The refsetId points to the previously generated reference set identification concept which specifies the relevant language or dialect. This may be an existing language refset in This refers to the concept id of a descendant of Concept |

Note that a prerequisite to specifying the language preferences for a given description is the establishment of the language reference set itself. Practically speaking, a language refset set has been established once - The reference set concept has been created (along with it's associated components and derivatives)
- Individual members of the refset have been defined in refset rows
- A language refset file has been generated (in RF2 format) and published
|
for the given language or dialect. |

Note some extension producers may need to establish separate create and populate more than one language reference setsset. For example, one for language translations and another for the addition of where different languages or dialects are used within a country, or where both clinician and patient friendly terms must be specified. |
