SNOMED International highly values clinical input into the development and maintenance of SNOMED CT. Clinical engagement ensures that the terminology meets both current and future clinical requirements. The session aims to provide an overview of clinical engagement and the work currently underway within SNOMED International and the broader clinical SNOMED CT community.

"As we move to increased digitalisation of healthcare, clinicians’ ways of working will change, providing opportunities to improve healthcare delivery. The use of terminology and standards provides the building blocks to provide clinicians with actionable data, supporting clinicians and clinical practice. Dermot O’Riordan is a consultant surgeon at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust in the UK, where he was previously Medical Director and also Interim Chief Executive Officer. He is currently the Chief Clinical Information Officer and responsible for delivering the e-Care integrated electronic health record project, with Cerner. Dermot will discuss his views and opinions on the future challenges and opportunities based on his extensive experience”.

The clinical day is broadly structured into three distinct sessions. The first will provide the overall context to clinical engagement, provide a review of work currently underway and the future direction of developments. The second session will comprise a series of meetings in parallel of clinical reference groups (CRG’s). These meetings will provide an opportunity to observe and partake in some of the clinical discussions currently underway. The final session will provide an opportunity for all the CRG’s to report back to provide an overall view of the work of each group to the larger audience.
