SnoChatSlackhttps://chatsnomedintl.snomedtoolsslack.orgcom/, is the onlinenew cloud-based, collaborative team chat application for application being used by SNOMED International. It is built upon Rocket Chat, an open source chat server and is similar to other tools such as Slack and HipChat. We are providing our own server in order to store the full history of conversations and data, and to be able to provide a chat platform that both staff and the community can use without increasing costs from external service providers such as Slack. Slack is very similar to the previous tool used by the organization, SnoChat, but is provided as a cloud service and has betterl features including:

  • direct integration with Zoom, Google Calendar and other SNOMED International tools
  • more fine grained notification management & 'do not disturb' settings
  • message threading
  • user statuses
  • stable and mature mobile apps

After using Rocket Chat for over a year, we have come to realize that, considering the priorities of the organization, the overhead for managing this service outweighs the benefit of having a service in-house. Slack is probably the most mature chat platform available, having been around for a number of years. It meets all of our requirements and more, as well as removing the infrastructure management overhead.

Note

This service will replace our current use of

HipChat

SnoChat.

 If you are currently using

HipChat

SnoChat, then

this tool

Slack will be the tool you use going forward and the way it works will be very familiar.

However, if you have never heard of HipChat, then you are welcome to come and try out SnoChat and set up private groups for your team

SnoChat will be taken out of service by 1st July 2018. If there is anything you would like to keep from Rocket Chat, please do so before then.
