Description

Living organism systematics (taxonomy) is a dynamic field.  New organism classes are discovered and named. Existing organism classes are occasionally reclassified.  Existing organism classes are occasionally split or combined.  The name changes may also produce changes in the names of infectious disorders.

The dynamic nature of organism class names places a burden on developers of medical information systems.   Tracking changes in the name of any particular organism class across time is essential to a number of laboratory and epidemiological activities.

Objectives

  1. To develop a library of (unique) organism name change examples to inform the editorial processes.
  2. To create a satisfactory editorial process for changing organism names including, but not limited to, simple renaming, reclassification and renaming, etc.
