We have had the following query from our Dutch translation colleagues. Please could you bring this to the group for discussion and proposal for resolution.

From Feikje Hielkema-Raadsveld:

"A psychiatric disorder is a stronger term than a 'mere' mental disorder. They are often used interchangeably in English (not in Dutch), so we understand why 74732009 | Mental disorder (disorder) | has the synonym psychiatric disorder. But it is not correct, and in this situation concept ( 161464003 |History of psychiatric disorder (situation)| ), if psychiatric disorder is the FSN then the concept should be primitive, not sufficiently defined.

See e.g. https://cpr.bu.edu/resources/reasonable-accommodations/what-is-psychiatric-disability-and-mental-illness/ for the distinction between mental and psychiatric disorder.

Many thanks for your help.
Kind regards
Paul

  1. Thanks Paul.

I will add this to the agenda for the Nov 4 call.

For clarification - I noticed the attached reference is published by folks in the US.  Does the distinction between psychiatric disorder, organic brain disorder, and intellectual/learning disorders discussed in this reference address the complete set of distinctions made by the Dutch between mental and psychiatric disorders?

Also - where do Personality Disorders fit in the Dutch view? Are these considered psychiatric disorders (more like mood disorders), or mental disorders (more like learning disorders)?

    Thanks, Piper

  2. Piper Allyn Ranallo , I will ask Feikje to respond to your query.

    Kind regards

    Paul

  3. Piper Allyn Ranallo , Feikje has responded to say that they are going to refer your query to their Psychiatrists and get back to us.

I will let you know when I hear more.

    Kind regards

    Paul

  4. Hi Paul Amos,

It looks like the issue has been closed as resolved. Is there anything further you need from the CRG on this one?

    Piper

  5. Hi Piper Allyn Ranallo, Apologies, I'm not sure how this has been marked as resolved.

It looks as though if someone marks the reply as useful it indicates the end of the discussion!

I will followup with Feikje to see if they have had a response yet. I will let you know when we are in a position for the CRG to address the response to your query for additional information.

    Best wishes, Paul

  6. Hi Piper Allyn Ranallo, I have a response from Feikje stating that they have been unable to get further clarification from their domain specialists and therefore are content for this query to be closed.

    Best wishes, Paul
