As of the July 2017 release all descriptions that are inactivated in the International Edition will use one of the following four values:

  • | Not semantically equivalent component (foundation metadata concept) | - new concept
  • | Outdated component (foundation metadata concept) |
  • | Erroneous component (foundation metadata concept)
  • | Non conformance to editorial policy component (foundation metadata concept) | - new concept.

9.1.2.1 | Duplicate component (foundation metadata concept) |

This value will be seen in the SCAT tool given it is used for authoring of both International and National content. The value | Duplicate component (foundation metadata concept) | is only required in extensions for descriptions where the concept has been promoted to a parent extension or the International Edition and new descriptions with the same string are created as part of that promotion. In this particular scenario | Duplicate component | should be selected in preference to the other description inactivation indicator values.

These values will not be applied retroactively.

9.1.2.2 Description inactivation values

ValueDefinitionExample
Not semantically equivalent component (foundation metadata concept)

A description that does not represent the same meaning as the concept's Fully Specified Name.

A description that does not represent the same meaning as the concept's Fully Specified Name; Editorial Guide: 7.1.4 Synonym

Outdated component (foundation metadata concept)A component that is no longer current, useful, appropriate or acceptable.

The synonym "Funny looking kid" was inactivated from 112630007|Abnormal facies (finding)|.
Erroneous component (foundation metadata concept) A component that contains a technical error. Case significance changes e.g. Alpha where the lower case a should have been used. Spelling errors e.g. A description where Asthma is misspelt "Assthma".
Nonconformance to editorial policy component (foundation metadata concept)A component that fails to comply with the current editorial guidance.

The description 167230004| Urine: turbid (finding) | was inactivated and replaced by “Turbid urine (finding)”.

9.2.2 Order of selection of inactivation values

When inactivating descriptions, more than one value may be applicable. To support consistency, when selecting an inactivation value an order of preference has been determined as follows:

  1. | Not semantically equivalent component (foundation metadata concept) | - new concept
  2. | Outdated component (foundation metadata concept) |
  3. | Erroneous component (foundation metadata concept) |
  4. | Non conformance to editorial policy component (foundation metadata concept |

    • Example: The synonym is not semantically equivalent nor does it align with editorial policy
FSN | Myocardial infarction (disorder) |
Synonym: | Heart attack, NOS |
Action: Inactivate | Heart attack, NOS | as | Not semantically equivalent (foundation metadata concept) |

In this example, the value | Not semantically equivalent component (foundation metadata concept) | would be selected in preference to | Non conformance to editorial policy component (foundation metadata concept) |.
